A balcony can’t do without flowers. But not everywhere will plants thrive and feel equally good. Choose your dream balcony flowers, taking into account both your aesthetic needs and the requirements of the plants!
Impatiens are dome-shaped, 20-25 cm high and produce quite a large number of magnificent red, white or pink flowers. The petals can be straight or wavy. The main rule for caring for the plant is to water it regularly and abundantly – without water, impatiens will quickly die. The plant feels good in partial shade, but badly tolerates sunlight. The best place for it is north, east or west.
Bulbous begonias, available in a wide range of colors, are ideal for shady and semi-shaded balconies. Depending on the variety, tuberous begonias have creeping stems or an upright habit. The plants produce large, straight or wavy flowers in red, white, pink or orange. Begonias should be watered regularly, once every few days.
Violets, or pansies, grow to a height of about 30 cm. When grown in balcony boxes or pots they create beautiful multi-colored compositions. Violets are distinguished by the intensity and variety of their colors – they produce white, yellow, orange, purple and burgundy flowers. Violets in boxes should be combined with other plants with similar requirements. They should be watered in moderation, once every few days. The flowers feel best on a balcony with east or west exposure.
Scented peas are plants with small red, white, pink or purple petals that spread a pleasant aroma. Climbing varieties look great on the balcony but should be given support. It is enough to install a light trellis or stretch a thread – the plant is so light and limp that it does not need solid supports. Dwarf varieties, reaching 45 cm in height, can also do without them. Fragrant peas need moderate watering. The substrate should always be slightly moist.
Anemone is a climbing plant, so it works well as a balcony railing cover. We have to provide it with a trellis, trellis, stakes or strings. A month after planting, we can expect a green curtain interspersed with large cup-shaped flowers. Anemone usually comes in three colors: white, blue and purple. The plant feels comfortable on every balcony and has a very long flowering period: from July to September or even October.
Another climbing plant which will need support to grow. Depending on the size of the specimen, these can be a wooden trellis or a wigwam of bamboo poles. The plant produces showy, colorful flowers: white, pink, blue, sky-blue and purple. Varieties reaching a height of 3-4 meters will be best suited for balconies. The plant needs regular watering – it tolerates drought very badly. However, beware of excess moisture in the substrate in order to prevent the roots from rotting. Most clematis grow best in sunny or slightly shaded positions. On balconies with a northern exposure, their cultivation can be more difficult.
